and was born in Hamburg in 1989.<br \/>\nI graduated from high school in Norderstedt.<br \/>\nI am an automotive engineer.<br \/>\nBefore my studies, I completed an apprenticeship as an automotive mechatronics technician.<br \/>\nI have been a volunteer at the THW for 22 years.<br \/>\nHere I met people early on who share an interest with me: Helping.<br \/>\nI was deployed in the Berchtesgadener Land region when masses of snow caused exceptional situations, so to speak, and also in the Ahr valley during the floods in summer 2021.<br \/>\nWorking for the Federal Agency for Technical Relief means a lot to me, even in Schweinfurt, where I&#8217;ve lived for seven years.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve settled in well in Bavaria, even though the north is still my home.<br \/>\nI enjoy getting involved.<br \/>\nI would like to do the same for KAKS.<br \/>\nI became aware of the foundation through an article in Der Spiegel.<br \/>\nI enjoyed my first digital contact with the KAKS encouragers.<br \/>\nI think I could answer a lot of questions.<br \/>\nI had bilateral retinoblastoma; I was one year old when the doctors made the diagnosis.<br \/>\nAnd removed my left eye.<br \/>\nThe first time my parents took me to an ophthalmologist was when I was a baby, about six months old.<br \/>\nBut it was almost a year before I was diagnosed and enucleated.<br \/>\nA classic medical mistake.<br \/>\nApparently in my case there is a hereditary predisposition.<br \/>\nMy father, who sadly passed away a few years ago, had no sight in his eye, the other one having been removed in the 1950s.<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t know much about it.<br \/>\nMy mother also passed away; she succumbed to breast cancer.<br \/>\nCancer has been a direct companion to my family and me for long periods of my life.<br \/>\nI can only say that soberly.                         <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-691aaa2 again.<br \/>\nA carcinoma in the corner of my left eye.<br \/>\nI was out of action for three months.<br \/>\nI haven&#8217;t worn a glass eye since then.<br \/>\nOf course, the doctors could resurface the area and restore the eyelid.<br \/>\nAnd at first I wanted to have it done, but I walk around like this and live with it.<br \/>\nThe looks from the adults were difficult.<br \/>\nEven the children, who didn&#8217;t avert their eyes.<br \/>\nLet them look, I thought at the time.<br \/>\nAnd the physical strain was hard.<br \/>\nI was off work for a long time.<br \/>\nThese are certainly the difficult, dark phases in my life.<br \/>\nThe separation from my wife is also part of it.<br \/>\nAll that is behind me now.<br \/>\nUnfortunately, I&#8217;m currently going through another difficult phase.<br \/>\nThe retina of my eye is threatening to detach.<br \/>\nWithout going into detail: There were treatment options.<br \/>\nI have decided on one.<br \/>\nAnd it&#8217;s tough.<br \/>\nBut for me there is no alternative.<br \/>\nBut it is successful and worth pursuing.                    <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div eye clinic in Essen and currently at the medical university in Hanover.<br \/>\nThis is research into genetic predisposition.<br \/>\nI would like to help clarify the question of where the cancer came from.<br \/>\nWithout expectations.<br \/>\nWithout a basic attitude.<br \/>\nRetinoblastoma is a rare disease, although there are 5000 to 7000 new cases every year.<br \/>\nBut the number of studies is not immense.<br \/>\nAs a participant in a study, I have the feeling that I can make a contribution to raising awareness.<br \/>\nIt is the potential for help that I want to give.<br \/>\nAnd this is where I see potential for KAKS: I want to pass on what I have experienced.<br \/>\nBut that also means not being treated any differently than anyone else &#8211; without RB.<br \/>\nMy father was always an independent person because his parents raised him to be.<br \/>\nAnd he passed this level of independence on to me.<br \/>\nHis legacy, so to speak.
