KAKS organizes and finances first transport of children with cancer from Ukraine to Essen

21 children with cancer from Ukraine arrived at Essen University Hospital on Sunday, March 6, accompanied by their mothers and siblings.
Five of the children remained in Essen for treatment, the others have already traveled on to other cancer clinics in NRW.

The boys and girls seemed tired, some physically weak, one child came in a wheelchair.
All of them were first tested for coronavirus and given food and drink.
The young patients come from different parts of Ukraine.
Prof. Dr. Dirk Reinhardt, Director of the Children’s Hospital: “Before the situation escalated any further, we tried to at least get the children out.”

Medical care for the children and young people was severely compromised in the midst of the war, the clinic spokesperson explained.
They were suffering from various types of cancer, including leukaemia, and needed special medication and specialized treatment.

A Polish cancer center in Lublin had arranged the transport and KAKS, in close cooperation with the University Hospital Essen and the German Society for Paediatric Oncology and Haematology, Prof. Angelika Eggert, organized the transport and financed it with the help of many private donors.

An emotional day.
Thanks to everyone who helped.
