6 WARNING SIGNS
Retinoblastoma

Suspicion of retinoblastoma?
You’ve come to the right place.
Remember: Only a doctor can make the diagnosis.

A white pupil

If you see a white pupil in flash photos, this is an alarm signal.
A red pupil is inconspicuous – but a white, yellow or orange pupil can be an indication of a disease.
White pupils are not always visible in all pictures.

Not every white pupil has to be a retinoblastoma.
Even in a healthy eye, the pupil can sometimes light up white when the optic nerve head is struck by a flash of light.
Only a doctor can clarify whether it is a retinoblastoma.

The absence of the "red pupil" in flash photos

Photographs in which one pupil is red and the other is black or looks different should be shown to the ophthalmologist.

Strabismus

Strabismus can be a warning sign.
Strabismus in a small child must be examined.
The doctor will then decide what to do.

Red, inflamed or swollen eye without infection

If a child’s eye is frequently inflamed for no apparent reason, it should be examined.

Change in the color of the iris

The iris, i.e. the ring that forms the eye color, may be slightly changed in color – possibly only in a small area.
This also needs to be examined.

Deterioration in visual acuity

If your child’s vision is poor from birth, if it deteriorates during the first few years of life or if you notice that your child does not focus or react like other children of the same age, have it checked.

Good to know

If your child shows any of these warning signs, please consult an ophthalmologist immediately.
It is essential that the eyes are opened wide so that a thorough examination can be carried out.
